Innovación en el tratamiento de enfermedades infecciosas

Phases: Innovation in infectious disease treatment (I)

9 de July de 2024

At Cognodata we are conducting an exciting research project: Innovation in the treatment of infectious diseases. Thanks to our collaboration with Red.es, we advanced our goal of developing generative systems based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) that will help in the future to model infectious diseases.

Here, we tell you about the progress of this project, which was deployed in several phases with important achievements in each one of them.

Phase 1: Exploratory and Definition.

For 18 months, our team focused on evaluating different Intelligent Adaptive Control Systems (IACS) and Schema-based Machine Learning (SBL) frameworks and algorithms. This stage was crucial to understand how we could apply these algorithms to infectious disease modelling.

We selected two target diseases, a viral and a bacterial infection, to focus our efforts on specific medical areas.

We worked closely with doctors at Povisa Hospital, ensuring that our models were clinically relevant. In addition, UAM provided us with expertise in advanced AI, essential for the development of accurate models.

At the end of this first phase, we achieved:

  • Definir las líneas de investigación finales sobre frameworks y algoritmos SCAI y SBL.
  • Seleccionar las dos enfermedades desde un enfoque clínico, innovador y funcional.

Phase 2: Development of the Pilot Platform.

For five months, we worked on creating an advanced simulation platform to improve preparedness and response times in medical care. Data from Povisa Hospital, fundamental to the development of our models, was received.

Meetings with medical professionals helped us understand their needs and define the platform’s functional and technical requirements. The platform’s structure was designed and the first version (v.0) was built; extensive testing was then conducted with the medical team to ensure that the platform met expectations and could be used effectively in practice.

At the end of this second phase, we achieved:

  • Complete the functional design.
  • Define the specific technical design.
  • Develop the initial version of the pilot platform (v.0).

Phase 3: Development of SCAI and SBL Algorithms.

In this phase, we focused on creating new advanced algorithms:

  • Development of SCAI 1.0 algorithms: These algorithms allowed us to optimise the regulation of biological processes using advanced AI, adjusting parameters in real time to effectively respond to disease evolution.
  • Development of SBL 1.0 algorithms: We created algorithms that modelled and adjusted parameters of complex biological systems, allowing us to generate customised models adapted to the needs of each patient.

Integrated into our pilot platform, these algorithms were tested and validated in real conditions with the collaboration of Hospital Povisa and UAM.

At the end of this third phase, we achieved:

  • Develop SCAI algorithms version 1.0.
  • Develop the SBL algorithms version 1.0.
  • Integrate these algorithms into the base pilot platform.

Innovation in the treatment of infectious diseases is just the beginning of our journey in infectious disease treatment innovation. For a more complete overview, we invite you to read the first part of this project on our blog.
